The Leibniz-Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut is hiring a student assistant (m/f/d) interested in Computational Social Science for our Social Media Observatory. We are looking forward to work with you as soon as possible.

You will work in a small team of motivated people and support us in building up our Social Media Observatory – a project that will help many researchers within and outside the institute. You will contribute to the data we collect, document and help to code the tools we curate and develop, and support us monitoring the infrastructure that we provide, while gaining practice and experience on the job.

Contract periods can be flexibly arranged between six months and one year. Extensions are possible.
Working hours can be chosen between a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 80 hours per month, depending on the contractual arrangements. Remuneration is based on the university rate (currently 10.77 EUR / hour). To be eligible you have to be enrolled in a Bachelor, Masters or equivalent (German) university programme.
Area of responsibility
The vacant position will support the team of the Social Media Observatory (SMO) project in implementing and documenting software to collect and analyse data from different social media and other platforms (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Wikipedia, …).
Requirements
We welcome applicants from all disciplines with an interest in computer-aided methods in media research.
We expect good programming skills in Python or R as well as knowledge of database technologies.
We also welcome experience in test-driven development, web scraping or the use of REST APIs, version control with Git and data visualisation with Dash or RShiny. A good knowledge of and skills in English writing as well as in spoken and written German is helpful for the documentation tasks.
